In January of 2008 I was deployed to Al Taqqadum, Iraq with Personnel Retrieval & Processing Detachment . Basically, our responsibilities included recovering the remains of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Coasties or Marines that were killed in action. We’d inventory their effects and we would transport them home for a military burial.

When I came back home my unit performed funeral services for those same service members that were killed overseas. You know the scene: three men or women in full military dress play taps and fold the flag before their fallen brother or sister is laid to rest for the last time. As I conducted these, I noticed something that to this day still makes me uneasy. None of the families ever expected it to be their loved one and yet, it was. Now they are left trying to figure out what to do next.

And from that experience I realized that it’s impossible to completely eliminate risk from our lives. The most we can do is to manage it as much as possible. So, today and every day I think about those families that I served while I was in the Marines and today, it’s my new mission to protect as many people in my community from going through what they did which is to be completely unprepared for what to do next when “it'll never happen” happens.
